Apprenticeship programs are often required to obtain a state or provincial plumbing license but all too often it is difficult for the plumber to survive on low wages and for the company to maintain profitability while this training is in process.  In most cases apprentice plumbers are not trained to produce profitable results in their early years and the net result is many quality people either leave the industry for a better opportunity or never enter into it in the first place. 

Ride-A-Long training has been used to teach the trade to apprentice plumbers but there’s simply not enough time for the experienced plumber to stop and explain what's going on...how it works...and to allow the apprentice enough time to do it themselves!  At the end of the day "ride-along training" turns into lost productivity with the senior plumber and the apprentice is not much further along than when they started.  In addition, there is sometimes bad information and bad habits passed along.

Develop Maintenance Technicians...

• Hire a person with the right people skills and attitude along with good mechanical skills...
• Get them some field experience and make sure the technician and company has a future together...
• Send them to UTA’s Plumbing course…
• Allow them to “polish” their skills through additional "On the Job Training" where they perform work under supervision and then depending on the technician, they are usually able to run Plumbing maintenance and perform repairs.

This gets a technician up and running and allows them to generate a stream of revenue while working through their apprenticeship program. When the apprentice runs into repairs that they can’t perform themselves, they can sell the repair, make a materials list and set it up for an experienced Plumber that can get the job done!

Develop Productive Apprentices to work with Experienced Plumbers…

When an apprentice works on-site with an experienced Plumber, it is important for them to be productive and not someone that just hands tools and cleans up after the experienced plumber! Apprentices must have the skills to work independently on tasks so they can be productive and not just ride along until they learn something. The challenge is that many of the tasks that they could perform; they have not yet been trained for or studied in their apprenticeship program. UTA’s Plumbing course teaches what these apprentices need to get a "jump-start" in the field and focuses on the "hands-on" training it takes to be independently productive and perform many of the routine tasks while working alongside a senior technician.  This leads to more chargeable tasks and increased revenue.  

Cross Train your Technicians... 

Companies that already perform work in HVAC, Electrical and Plumbing can cross train technicians to pick up extra work while they are already in the home for other services. For instance...when a tech is running an HVAC call, they can also perform a plumbing inspection and make minor repairs while they are there. If necessary, they can sell the work and set up a major repair for the experienced plumber.

Technicians that attend any of UTA's courses are taught how to explain to the customer the condition of their system along with the various components and accessories that is available. Through the confidence that Technicians gain because of a better understanding of the system and its components, they are better able to relate the benefits to the client.

Topics Covered in this Class:

•  The Home Plumbing Inspection: This module takes students through an inspection of the plumbing fixtures and components.  Students are taught what to inspect and how to communicate the repairs that are recommended to put the system, fixtures and components back in top operation.
• Piping, Tubing and Soldering: This module takes students the various piping and tubing materials used throughout the plumbing industry.  Students will receive training in the classroom but most of all; they have lab projects where they use these materials.  Students will receive a certification from the manufacturer for PEX tubing and CSST/TracPiping.  Students will receive classroom and hands-on training for copper soldering and they will also work with PVC.
•  Plumbing Repair: This module takes students through the repairs of plumbing fixtures throughout the home.  Students will completely rebuild water closets, faucets and learn many “tricks of the trade” that it takes makes these repairs successful.  Students will learn the proper tools required for various repairs.
• The Hot Water System: Students will learn about the construction and operation of both gas and electric water heaters.  Students will do a full inspection, tear-down and rebuild of both types of water heaters and learn how to troubleshoot each one.  Students will learn the value of expansion tanks and when they are required.
• The Sewer and Drain System: Students will learn the various configurations of sewer and drain systems along with the fittings used.  Students will understand the need for proper venting and the many different ways the sewer and drain system is vented.  Students will understand the basics of drain cleaning along with getting hands-on experience with drain cleaning.
• Gas and Combustion: Students will learn the importance of proper gas connections and combustion.  Students will adjust burners and understand the need for proper combustion air to an appliance.
• Electricity and Plumbing: Students will learn the basics of electricity and circuits and how to troubleshoot basic circuits using a volt-ohm-amp meter.  Students will have hands-on projects that range from basic wiring circuits and go through wiring an electric water heater.
• Plumbing Soft Skills: Students will learn the math used in the plumbing trade along with how to make an effective materials list and an isometric sketch of their work.  Students will understand the importance and techniques of good communications with the customer to describe their work and options for repairs.

 

 Q: What will students be able to do when they return?

Newer Apprentice Plumbers: will learn the skills needed to identify the most common problems found in the residential plumbing system. They will be able to diagnose and perform maintenance repairs now, and have a foundation to build their career on. With the ability to perform most of the plumbing maintenance tasks in the home, they will be more productive as they work through their apprenticeship program.

Technicians that have a Year or Two of Experience: will improve their diagnostic skills so they can quickly and accurately troubleshoot plumbing problems. This gives technicians the ability to take on more difficult calls and allows them to excel in their career. Students not only gain the technical knowledge they must have, but also the confidence they need to succeed.
